Summer Olympics 2008

The summer Olympics was held this year from August 8 – 24 in Beijing, China. I always enjoy watching the Olympics because it is great to see so many countries around the world come together for an international sports event. I was disappointed that I missed the opening and closing ceremony this year. I really enjoy watching the ceremonies because I can see the performances and also the parade of the nations as well. For the opening ceremony I was with the OM team and for the closing ceremony the team from England arrived that day. I also missed watching the Olympics the first week because I didn’t have access to a TV when I was with the OM team. Oh, well but I got to watch the rest of it the second half of the event. I am so thankful Romania had very good coverage of the Olympics which was wonderful to be able to watch it anytime even when it wasn’t live!

The top three countries with the gold ranking were: China, The United States and Russia. The United States actually got the most medals (110) with China getting the next highest (100) but China got the most gold medals. Romania came in the 16th place with 8 medals and Canada came in the 19th place with 18 medals. It was great to see Romania do well in the Olympics and Canada also did very well too (even better then in 2004)!

The next Olympics will be in Canada for the Winter Olympics in 2010! It will be held in Vancouver from February 12 – 18, 2010. I just did a quick search and found out Canada has hosted the summer Olympics games once in Montreal, Quebec in 1976 and Canada has hosted the winter Olympics games once before in 1988 in Calgary, Albert. I’m really excited that the Olympics games will be back in Canada!
