April Romania Update!

April 28, 2009

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you are doing well and you are enjoying this spring season we are in now. It is beautiful here where I live to see all the flowers and trees begin to bloom and blossom!

New School Term Began

The last week of March I had a break off school. I was thankful for the break in between the terms and I think all of the staff was thankful for the break to be able to relax and unwind before our last school term began. On Monday April 6th our spring term began, it is for eleven weeks and it will run until June 19th. This term we continue to offer classes of variety of different levels from intro beginner classes all the way to the CAE (Cambridge preparation course for the certificate for advance English examination). We also continue to offer classes to business students and something brand new we began this term which is conversation classes for students who just want to focus on their speaking skills in their English.

After two years of being in Romania God has opened up the doors for me to just focus on teaching the children this term. I am very thankful because this is what I have wanted to do since I have arrived here! This term I have two younger children’s classes which are ages 7 – 10 years old and two older children’s classes which are ages 11 – 14 years old. Three of my classes I am continuing from the previous term and I have one brand new class with the younger children. The children in my new class are very well behaved, helpful and are so eager to learn which makes it such a joy to teach them!

Easter Celebration in Romania

In the city I live here in Romania the population is half Romanian and half Hungarian so there are two Easter celebrations!  The Hungarians celebrate Easter on the weekend of April 10th and the Romanians celebrate Easter on the weekend of April 17th which is according to the Orthodox calendar. Some of the traditions Romanians do here are going to the Orthodox church at midnight at the eve of Easter Sunday, decorating eggs, eating lamb for the main meal and the boys even go around to the girls and spray perfume at them!

This year I went to the New Convent church where they had special performances by the children and the youth for Easter. After church my YWAM friends invited me to join them for dinner which was an unexpected surprise! However you celebrated Easter I hope you had a wonderful time with your family as you rejoiced and remembered what Christ did for us!

Ministry at Life and Light

Every Friday afternoon I continue to go to Life and Light group home where I ministry to the orphan children there along with the other volunteers that also go along to reach out to the children. At the end of March two more people began volunteering (Rob who is Bek’s husband and Corina who is one of my former students)! Lately when we have been going to the home we have been spending lots of great quality time with the children playing with them outside!

There is a set of twins who live there. They are ten years old now and they have been abandoned since they were babies. The boy has speech problems and is very developmentally behind. The girl is also behind but not as far as her brother. They both have a special place in my heart as all of the children do at the group home. I was able to spend a bit of one on one time with the girl last Friday which was a special bonding moment! We went for a walk around the outside of the home and just chatted about different things. We held hands as we walked and talked. She looked up at me and said “I love you” and I responded by telling her that I loved her too. Then I asked her “do you know that Jesus loves you?” She responded by saying “yes” and then I asked her “how much do you think Jesus loves you, a little or a lot?” She responded by saying “a lot”. I smiled and told her “yes He really does!” God really reminded me last week that He has called me to reach out to the hurting and abandon children here. God is so good!

Praise Reports!

  • I praise God for all of the special moments that He is giving me with the children!
  • I praise God for all of the “approvals” that I got from people for me to get a cat. Now I just need to find a kitty! Thank-you for your prayers.
  • I praise God for all of the friends He has put into my life to encourage me to keep seeking after the Lord and also to not give up on my Romanian as well.

Prayer Requests:

  • For my Romanian language learning. Please pray for me that God will daily increase my desire and motivation to communicate in the language. For me to respond in Romanian when people speak to me and not English. Most of all for me to remember not to give up no matter what.
  • For the rest of the school term that it will go well.
  • For God to increase the love and compassion in my heart for the children both at Rozmarin and Life and Light. It is my desire that the children will know in their hearts their value in Christ.
  • For my personal relationship with God that I will continue to daily grow in Him for this is the passion in my heart to be all that He has created me to be.
