May Romania Update!

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you are doing well and you are enjoying the warm weather that we are having now! This past week the weather has been rainy and cool so I’m looking forward to the summer.

Canada Event at School

On Saturday May 9th I had the privilege and honour of representing Canada to the English school I teach at here in Romania! In the past we have had different events for the States, for England and also for Australia but we haven’t had any events for Canada so this was the first time I was able to host an event for Canada since I came to Romania. The classroom we used I had it decorated with flags, maps, postcards and I also put out some books about Canada. I even wore my winter Olympics T-shirt that Vancouver will be hosting next year in February 2010.

The first half of the evening we played fun games like Dutch Blitz, UNO and scramble. The second half of the event I did different quizzes about Canada. I split everyone into groups and they worked together to come up with the answers. The questions in the quizzes were based on topics like stereotypes people have of Canada, the geography of the country and there were even questions about Toronto too. I was quite surprised by how many people didn’t know some of the most common questions about Canada! When I did my preparation for the event I even learned a lot about my native home country too. We had a great turn out for the event. When the quiz was over at the end before everyone left, I gave out Canadian stickers to thank everyone for coming out. I feel very grateful for the opportunity God gave me to show and tell people about Canada!

A difficult time for my church

On Wednesday April 29th, I got a phone call from one of my friends from church that was quite a shock to me as well as it was to the rest of my church. I attend a small church here (around 40 people) so when we heard the news about Csaby we all took it to heart because we are a very close church family. That morning Csaby who is one of the teenagers from my home church here in Romania got hit by a car. The accident was very serious he was sent to the hospital right away, he had some major injuries and he had surgery as well. He even stopped breathing but the doctors were able to revive him. However he fell into a coma that day. Csaby’s body was starting to heal and get better but on Saturday May 9th, his heart just stopped and he went home to be with the Lord.

I went to Csaby’s funeral which was held at a Catholic cemetery in Reghin on Tuesday May 12. Unfortunately it rained but everyone stayed huddled under umbrellas. There were a lot of people there (maybe 300) and quite a number of high school students. Then on Sunday May 17, my church did a special memorial service for Csaby which was very special and meaningful to a lot of people especially to the church. Four people shared testimonies about Csaby’s life, we had guests from a church in Bucharest and we also had a film of a collection of different pictures of Csaby’s life. Csaby was very involved in church and he enjoyed playing the drums every Sunday in the worship band. I will never forget his faith and passion he had for the Lord especially in his teen years (he was 17 years old). He was such an inspiration to so many people of how he lived his life for God. He will definitely be missed but we will see him one day again in heaven!

Ministering to the orphan and gypsy children

I continue to go to Rozmarin School every Tuesday and Thursday where I teach English classes to the gypsy children. This past month the children have been working on an English alphabet coloring book. This is an idea I thought of for the kids to do and take the book home at the end of the school year so they can remember their English class they had. I enjoy spending time with the kids there even when they don’t listen! They need a lot of love and compassion. I will only have a couple more weeks left with them until the school year finishes. My heart is to show them God’s love and they will know how special they are to Him.

Every Friday I continue to spend time with the children at Life and Light group home with Bek, Rob, Corina and now David who is our newest teacher on our staff. Yesterday we did a special event for the children for Children’s Day. We were hoping to take them to the forest, have a picnic there and do lots of fun outdoor games with them but it rained so we ended up doing everything inside instead. Even though we stayed inside the children still had a great time! We sang, played some games, did a craft and we ate the sandwiches we prepared for the afternoon. These kids have a very special place in my heart and I’d love to do a lot more with them as well as reach out to many more orphan children here.

Praise Reports!

·         I praise God for His peace and comfort He has given to me as well as my church since Csaby passed away.

·         I praise God for showing me more of His love for the children both at Rozmarin and Life and Light group home.

·         I praise God for the friends He has placed in my life who are all such a blessing to me!

Prayer Requests:

·         For me to continue to grow in my Romanian language learning every day.

·         For more opportunities to minister to the children at Rozmarin and Life and Light on a more one on one basis with individual children. Pray that God will help them to know their value in Him.

·         For my personal relationship with the Lord. Right now I’m seeking God specifically about something for my future here in Romania and I really need to hear from Him. Please pray that my ears and my heart may be totally open to hearing from what God is speaking to me about.

Multumesc pentru toate rugaciunile voastre si pentru email-urile de incurajare pe care mi le-ati trimis!

(Translation: Thank-you for all of your prayers and encouraging e-mails you sent to me. I really appreciate it!)

Blessings,

Andrea
