Mission to Romania
… bringing hope and restoration to a nation that’s hungry for God!
Monday January 18, 2010
Dear Family and Friends,
I hope you are doing well. It is hard to believe we are already in the middle of January in the New Year. I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating the holidays with your family and friends!
My trip to Oradea
God gave me the wonderful privilege of visiting Pathway to Joy Ministries in Oradea, Romania for a week in December. I was in Oradea from December 7 to the 14th. I travelled there by maxi taxi which took me about 5 hours to get there. Karen who is the director’s wife picked me up at the bus station when I arrived, and I stayed with her family at their house. I definitely had a very busy and full packed week while I was in Oradea! It was a great blessing from God to be able to see all of the different ministries that they do there and also meet all of the staff too. I was able to see the baby hospital ministry, their orphan mentoring project and visit Sabolciu gypsy village. That week I was there they had their orphanage and staff Christmas parties. Karen invited me to attend her woman’s bible study one evening which was also a real blessing to me as they are currently studying Beth Moore’s study on the book of Esther.
I really enjoyed my time in Oradea. It was such a blessing to see all the different ministries that the foundation does there. My heart was touched as I was with some of the children. I especially fell in love with the gypsy children in the Sabolciu village! I felt a bit overwhelmed with all the new people I met over the course of the week (they have a large staff of around 20 people!) but I was touched by how warmly received I was by their staff and how accommodating they were to me. God spoke to me throughout the week and I felt a real sense of peace that it was a good fit for me to serve with them. When I return to Romania in March I will be working with their orphan mentoring project, the children at the Sabolciu gypsy village, and help out part-time with some of the administration with their foster care program. I will continue to teach English but I will do it in these ministries that I’m passionate about serving in.
Christmas celebrations and farewells in Romania
Before I returned to Canada God gave me a few wonderful opportunities to celebrate Christmas with my Romanian and missionary friends in Romania. On Christmas Eve in the evening I celebrated Christmas with my two housemates Cristina and Evelyne. Cristina’s parents invited us to their apartment for dinner which was a real blessing to enjoy a delicious Romanian traditional meal! After we ate we sang Christmas carols together. On Christmas Day my missionaries’ friends from Australia invited me to their place for the day which was a real blessing! We exchanged some gifts, enjoyed a delicious meal and spent the rest of the day together playing games.
Saying my good-byes to my wonderful friends in Romania was a bit bitter and sweet as I was sad to say good-bye to them but excited for my next adventure. On Thursday December 17th my home church in Romania gave a small farewell party and my last Sunday at church they gave me a wonderful send off. I will miss many of my good friends and church very much as they have become like family to me in the last couple of years. I will miss my little Minnie too while I am in Canada!
Back in Canada
I flew back to Canada on Tuesday December 29th. For the first time I stayed in Cluj-Napoca the night before my flight but everything went very well. My first weekend home I had a late Christmas celebration with my relatives on New Year’s Day which was a bit difficult with my Nana just passing away. On Sunday January 3rd, my family and I had our Christmas celebration. This past weekend (January 15 – 17) my family visited my relatives and friends in the Rochester, NY. It has been really good to reconnect with family and some friends since I got back. Last week I bought my plane ticket for Romania! I will be returning on Tuesday March 23rd. During the next couple of months I will focus my time on fundraising for Romania and it is my desire to re-connect with as many friends and supporters as possible during my time at home. If you are currently supporting me on a monthly basis I would really appreciate your continual support during my time in Canada as it will be a great help to me.
- I praise God for the invitation I received from Pathway to Joy Ministries and for the wonderful week I had in Oradea! I give God praise of how He has led me to serve with them in the future.
- I praise God for all of my wonderful friends that have been such a blessing to me while I have been living in Târgu Mures these past couple of years!
- I praise God for my safe return to Canada and for being able to re-connect with my family and friends.
- I would appreciate your prayers for my personal relationship with God. It is my heart’s desire that during my time in Canada I will be able to continue to grow in Him, hear from Him and for God to continue to change me to be more like Him.
- I would appreciate your prayers as I meet with friends and supporters that God will speak to their hearts as I raise my support for Romania. Please pray for me for God to increase His confidence in me as I share that I will not be held back by fear in anyway. Pray also for God to bring new connection with people and for the funds to come in as I need to increase my financial support by at least $300 per month since I have left the English school and will now have to pay my own rent and utilities.
