April Romania Update!

Thursday April 29, 2010

Dear Family and Friends,

Greetings from warm and sunny Oradea in Romania!  It has been a cool spring here in Romania but finally the warm weather is out. I hope you’re having a beautiful spring where you live!

My time in Canada

I spent 2 ½ months at home in Canada which was the longest I had been home in 3 years! I flew home from Romania on December 29, ’09 and I flew back to Romania on March 23, ’10. My time at home was very busy but I also was able to take a much needed break too. I am very grateful for the time God gave me to spend with my family. In February my family and I went away for a mini family vacation which was a real blessing for all of us to have that time together. The first weekend in February we went to Ottawa for the winterlude festival. We had a great time together as we skated on the Rideau Canal, enjoyed the different activities and ate the famous beaver tails they have there. I enjoyed being home during the Winter Olympic games which was held on Canadian home soil in Vancouver!

While I was in Canada I was able to connect with my relatives, many of friends and supporters. Some people I actually met for the first time and some people I re-connected with them after not seeing them for a long time. I am very grateful of how God opened up so many wonderful doors of opportunities to meet with people and share the vision and passion God has placed on my life to reach out to the hurting children here in Romania. My heart is filled with encouragement and gratitude of how many people have took interest in what I’m doing here and how they have expressed interest in being a part of it. Thank-you to everyone who has invited me into their homes, their bible studies or took time out of your busy schedules to meet with me for coffee or something. I am very grateful of the amazing support group God has surrounded me with as I serve in Romania!

Returning to Romania and settling into my new home

The weekend before I flew back to Romania (March 20 – 21) I had two send offs. On Saturday I had a small get together at my home with some of my friends and supporters. Then on Sunday my church gave me a warm send off. It was such a blessing to be embraced with hugs and prayers before I left! My Mom even did a small bake sale for me which was a blessing! On Tuesday March 23rd, I flew back to Romania. I felt nervous about my check in but everything went extremely well and God gave a real sense of peace when I was at the airport. I flew to Romania with Austrian airlines, had my connection through Vienna and then flew to Cluj-Napoca with Romanian Tarom. Both of my flights went well!

I arrived in Romania on Wednesday March 24th. God provided me with a Christian driver both for my airport pick up and move to Oradea which was another blessing from God! I spent my first night in Târgu Mures. I stayed at my old apartment with my former housemates which was really nice to see them again. Then we drove to Oradea the next morning (it was almost a 5 hour drive). My cat Minnie at first wasn’t sure who I was when I returned but then she remembered me later that day. I was concerned about her when we travelled to Oradea but she did fine in the car! However the first couple of days in Oradea, Minnie was very stressed being in our new home but thankfully she adjusted after 3 days.

God provided me with a very cozy apartment here in Oradea! The staff found a great apartment for me but I didn’t see it until I arrived and I really liked it right away. I live in a nice size bachelor apartment which is a perfect size for Minnie and I to enjoy together. I have a really kind landlord which is a blessing from God! I am now living in Rogerius neighbourhood in Oradea which is on the west side of the city. The apartment is in a great location. Where I live it is very convenient with the foundation’s office very close (5 minutes), and also there are many shops, the market and the tram station that are all very close to where I live which is wonderful!

What I’m doing in Romania now

When I was here in December for my week’s visit I totally fell in love with the children at the Sabolciu gypsy village and it was my heart’s desire to work full-time with these precious ones. I’m so grateful that God has opened up those doors to do just that! I go there four times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) where I teach four different groups of children English. Next week I will start going on Wednesdays to help with the Bible club and I will also be going on Sunday afternoons twice a month to help with the children while Dan does church with the adults. During the week I work with Norbi and Mircea who are on full-time staff with Pathway to Joy Ministries. Before I moved to Oradea they were doing a Bible club throughout the week. They still do that, but now we are running two clubs at the same time with the English classes and the Bible study. I also help out a couple of times a week with two of the orphan mentoring groups from the local orphanage we work with here in Oradea.

These are the two ministries I’m currently involved with here in Romania. During the week I am also involved with two things. God provided me with a really great church which is super close to where I live! The church is called “Viată Nouă” which is translated as “New Life”. It is a great charismatic church and it is starting to feel at home there. Three weeks ago I got invited to a small group for youth and young adults. I go there every Monday evenings which is a real blessing for me to be a part of a network of friends from my new home church! Last week I started my Romanian lessons again. Norbi’s fiancée Mihaela is now teaching me twice a week on Monday and Wednesday mornings. It is great to get back into lessons and it is also really great to be finally immersed in the Romanian environment so I really hope my Romanian will improve a lot faster now!

Praise Reports!

  • I praise God for the amazing time I had at home in Canada and also the encouragement He gave me through the many different people I met with while I was home!
  • I praise God for giving me safe travels to Romania and also to Oradea.
  • I praise God for His help for Minnie and I’s adjustment to living in Oradea, finding a good church and also the ministries I am now involved with here.

 Prayer Respects:

  • I would appreciate your prayers for my continual adjustment in living in Oradea. I especially would like to ask prayer for close friends. Sometimes I feel lonely since I have arrived here. I have started to meet new friends but I feel it is important to have close friends to hang out with, to pray with or just to talk. Please pray for these new friendships to deepen.
  • I would appreciate your prayers for my continual Romanian language learning. I am grateful that I am a lot more immersed in Romanian but I continue to battle with my lack of confidence to communicate in the language and it is causing a hindrance in becoming fluent in it. Please pray that I will begin to believe that I can learn the language and to stop self-doubting myself.
  • I would appreciate your prayers for my relationships to grow closer to the children I am working with at the Sabolciu gypsy village. I desire to love them as Jesus does and to make a difference in their lives. Please pray that I will develop a deeper bond and trust with the children there.

Thank-you again for being my extended hands in Romania! Thanks so much for all of your encouraging e-mails and facebook posts. Thanks so much for your prayers! O zi bună (have a good day)!

Many blessings,
