May Romania Update!

Saturday May 29, 2010

Dear Family and Friends,

I hope you are doing well. It is hard to believe that I have been in Oradea, Romania two months already! Where does the time go?! This has definitely been a crazy spring with the weather so unpredicable. Now it looks like we may be getting an early summer.

Ministry at Sabolciu with the children

God has filled my heart with so much joy for the ministry He has called me to at the Sabolciu gypsy village! I honestly don’t think I have been this happy in a long time. Each child is so precious and beautiful. God has given me such a deep love and compassion for each child there. I am so encouraged to see the bond that God has brought between us even within this short amount of time. A couple of times I have went on Sunday afternoon to help with the children while Dan (he is on staff with us) does church with the adults. I have noticed going those two Sundays has made such a huge difference as I spent that time with the children just hanging out with them and getting to know them. The second Sunday I went God gave me a very special bonding moment with three of the girls there. All three girls hugged and kissed me at the same time! It was priceless!!

I continue to teach English to the children four times a week in Sabolciu. All of the children really seem to be enjoying their English classes. Yesterday it was very sweet when one of the girls thanked me for coming and teaching them English in her prayer after the class. The first month I taught the children introductions and the second month I taught them colours. I am very impress by how quickly some of the children are learning!

Learning Romanian

Nu pot să cred că in fiecare zi, vorbesc in limba română!! ( I cannot believe that everyday I am speaking in Romanian!!) When I lived in Târgu Mures I hardly spoke in Romanian because I worked with missionaries and I taught English full-time at the school so I had very few opportunities to practice my Romanian. However here in Oradea it is the complete opposite! Now I have many opportunities to practice my Romanian since I am now working with Romanians, I also speak with the children and my new friends in Romanian! It has been a blessing from God to get back into Romanian lessons too. Mihaela is a wonderful teacher. She has been a great encouragement to me as well, to not give up on learning the language but to keep on going. I still struggle a lot with my confidence when I communicate in Romanian. The interesting thing is I don’t feel nervous when I speak in Romanian with the children or with people who do not know English but I often struggle with my nerves when I speak with people who know English. Isn’t that strange? I need to remind myself everyday that I can learn the language because we can do ALL things through Christ!

Finding a place where I belong

Just over a week ago God reconnected me to a friend of mine that I met when I lived in Târgu Mures. He is from Oradea and went to Târgu Mures to do his DTS at YWAM. We somehow lost contact with each other because we did not have each other’s phone numbers or e-mail. However he was on my facebook friend list, he came online last Wednesday and we talked for a few minutes. We haven’t spoken in months so I don’t even think he knew I am here in Oradea. He did not know I was here and he was very surprised to hear I’m living here now! We met up last Thursday to just catch up with each other. He encouraged me to come to his church so I went and I love it! Salem church is across town from where I live by it is quite an amazing church and very different from any other church I have been to here in Oradea. As many of you know I have been struggling with loneliness a lot since I have been here. I believe God sees our tears and the desires of our heart because not only is God bringing close Christian friends into my life now but He has also led me to a church that’s hungry for Him! This church is so friendly! I feel it is a place where I am accepted, where I can belong and also where I can grow in my relationship with God!

Praise Reports!

  • I praise God for filling me with so much joy, compassion and love for working with the children!
  • I praise God for the improvement I have seen in my Romanian!
  • I praise God for reconnecting me to my friend Stefy I met in Târgu Mures and for leading me to a church that is welcoming and a place that is hungry for Him!

Prayer Requests:

  • I am planning on going to a leadership conference in Hungary (June 21 – 26) and also to camp with the orphan children (July 25- 31). Please pray for a cat sitter for Minnie.
  • I would appreciate your prayers that God will help me continue to improve in my Romanian and to stop being afraid or self-doubting myself but that I’ll believe in who God says about me!
  • I am very grateful for all of the new people and friends that God has given me since I have moved to Oradea. Please pray now that God will deepen these friendships as I really need close friends here and I also desire to have a prayer partner as well.

Thank-you for all of your prayers and encouraging e-mails. I appreciate it so much!!

Many blessings,

Andrea

About Andrea

I am from Whitby, Ontario. I have lived in Romania for 9 years as a missionary but I am currently in Canada on a sabbatical break at this time. I have also lived in South Korea for a year and I have also been to Russia, Uganda, Albania and the Czech Republic on short-term mission trips. In 2012, God also gave me an amazing opportunity to go to Mozambique for the Harvest Mission School with Iris Ministries as well. I love children, reaching out to people who are in need and vulnerable, I have a passion to fight against the injustice issue of human trafficking and to simply share the love of Jesus wherever I go. I also love cats too and I have a cat of my own named Minnie!
