Raptors Winning Their First NBA

IMG_1226The Raptors is the Toronto basketball team in the NBA (National Basketball Association). The Raptors does not only represent just Toronto but the team also represents Canada because it is the only NBA team in Canada. I am not personally a basketball or even a sports fan but when I heard the Raptors had made it to the finals I suddenly got interested to watch them play.

I ended up watching five out of the six games the Raptors played in the finals, though I kept checking the score during the first game.  I didn’t know I could watch the first game because I don’t have a sports channel but then afterwards I found out I could watch the games on TV.

The Raptors competed against the Warriors (from Oakland, California) from May 30 – June 13, 2019.  The Raptors won four games out of the six against the Warriors.  Canada was hungry to win the NBA championship title because we have won very few sports championship titles. Canada’s first sports championship was when the Toronto Maple IMG_1235Leafs won the NHL (National Hockey League) Stanley Cup back in 1967. Then the Toronto Blue Jays won back to back World Series in baseball in 1992 and 1993.

During the time the Raptors were in the finals there were thousands and probably millions of people all across Canada who watched the games. People watched the games at home, at sports bars or at the biggest cheering place in Toronto which was at the Jurassic Park where people could watch it on a large screen outside. Every time the Raptors won a game there were huge parties outside Toronto and across the country as people sang Canada’s national anthem and cheered “We the North”.

The last game the Raptors played in the finals against the Warriors was on Thursday June 13th. The game was pretty intense especially towards the end of it and it could have gone either way.  The Raptors ended up winning 114 to 110. Toronto won the series by 4 – 2. It was quite the celebration all over Canada when the Raptors won the NBA championship. It is really such a historic moment for Canada because this is the first IMG_1328time we have ever won a NBA championship for basketball in the country.

The Toronto Raptors had a victory parade in downtown Toronto on June 17th.  I decided to go to Toronto with my brother Jonathan for the parade and it was just insane with the amount of people that were there. It was estimated there were 1.5 – 2 million people that went to the parade. I would like to end this blog by giving my congratulations to the Toronto Raptors team for winning the NBA championship title.
